Осуществляется различными путями, например с помощью активации фермента, ковалентной модификации, ингибирования по типу отрицательной обратной связи, за счёт кооперативных или аллостерических эффектов.
Один из механизмов, посредством которого может осуществляться регуляция экспрессии оперонов в бактериях.
У эукариотов, имеет место при синтезе мРНК; может осуществляться при помощи белков, способных связываться с ДНК и даже при помощи коротких фрагментов РНК, которые спариваются с ДНК, предположительно блокируя места прикрепления РНК-полимеразы.
У эукариотов осуществляется за счёт того, что исключается возможность использования мРНК в качестве матрицы для синтеза белка, хотя она и присутствует в цитоплазме.
Осуществляется на уровне процессинга мРНК.
Основана на том, что многие белки синтезируются в неактивной форме и должны ещё пройти стадию модификации.
